At Saxony Farm Broussard and Rosie Hundley focus strongly on each horse as an individual. Whether it is the newborn foal or the older mare, a yearling bound for the sales ring, or a racehorse needing time away from the track, each horse is assessed independently according to its particular needs and placed on a program that best suits it.
Saxony Farm, which covers 165 acres of prime Bluegrass, is a peaceful, nurturing environment in which to raise and train Thoroughbreds. Under Broussard and Rosie Hundley, both of whom have spent their lives working with horses, Saxony offers these services:
Boarding
Broussard and Rosie are hands on with each horse on the farm, including the newborn foal, lactating mare, barren mare, weanling, yearling and the older horse. They attend each foaling, and from day 1, foals are well handled and have their feet picked. They determine individual dietary programs for each horse and accompany the veterinarian on daily rounds.
Breaking
The breaking process for each yearling typically starts at the beginning of October, when Broussard does the initial ground work before the rider is introduced. Saxony sets out a specific program for each yearling reflecting its needs and its progress. The farm emphasizes the importance of each horse being in a correct frame, relaxed and willing to learn.
Rehabilitation
For a racehorse that has sustained an injury or just needs a break from the track, Saxony’s Training Barn is designed for rest and recuperation. The barn’s indoor wood-chip jogging track, the nearby Bermuda-grass gallop, and adjoining free walker provide a quiet and safe environment for horses to prepare their return to the racetrack.
