Our History
In 1964, Louisiana native Bruce Hundley attended his first Kentucky Derby and witnessed the great Northern Dancer win the roses in a track-record time of two minutes flat. That day, he pledged to one day return to the Bluegrass State and raise Thoroughbreds. Four years later, Bruce and his wife, Susan, originally from Arkansas, moved to Lexington with their three young children.
Bruce studied equine nutrition at the University of Kentucky and gained invaluable experience at the racetrack while working a year for noted trainer Doug Davis Jr. In 1970, the Hundleys established Saxony Farm, naming the operation after Susan’s maiden name, Saxon.
With the experience that Bruce had gained while working for Davis, the support of loyal and enthusiastic owners, and the dedication and hard work of the team at Saxony bred, raised, sold, and raced some serious horsepower, including four champions in five years. An integral part of this success was the quality and hard work of those who worked at Saxony, from the farm manager to the exercise riders and from the blacksmith and the vet, who to this day are still associated with the farm.
